‘This is the path of eternal humanism: how man has sought to build himself up, to grow, intertwined with his fellow men, to grow as a whole, and not just himself, to give ethics its rightful place, and nothing more and nothing less than men. When civilisation is not care, it is nothing.’ Cynthia Fleury, Care is humanism.
On the occasion of the centenary of the Brugmann University Hospital Brussels, I immersed myself in the heart of this humanism shared by the men and women who embody it. I joined the daily routine of the various sites and care units to question and document the very essence of their profession. Whether they are caregivers, administrative or technical staff, they have all made the same choice: to commit themselves, with vigour and gentleness, to care. For others.
These photographs are about relationships, connections, gazes, bodies, rhythms and emotions. About moments – sometimes even on the edge of life – here and now. They are about civic issues, like a mirror held up to us as human beings: how far are we willing to go in our lives for others?
