La Peine

La Peine (2024), feature-length documentary, is an intimate and unprecedented plunge into the depths of prison life. By following the daily lives of the men and women who live there – inmates, guards and directors – the film reveals the cracks and hopes of a humanity that is trying to resist its own negation.

A film on a human scale that avoids all simplifications and manichean thinking. A film of incredible humanity in a world prone to dehumanisation.
The squalid conditions, lives that go on regardless, the loneliness, the visits, the departures—all captured in stark black-and-white images with meticulous composition: this is a powerful portrait of prison life.
Un documentaire puissant.
Ouest France
A powerful documentary.
L'Obs
With an aesthetic and thoughtful approach to filming, the filmmaker immerses himself in a Brussels prison and films without interfering in the daily lives of the inmates and prison officers. A formal choice that restores the dignity they all deserve.
“We have no training in dealing with living beings.” Because that is ultimately what it all comes down to, and Cédric Gerbehaye’s film leaves us with the sense, in hindsight, that we are simply watching human beings doing the best they can in the face of the absurdity of an archaic system in decline.
La Peine captures the repetition of everyday gestures, boredom, the little compromises and the tensions that mark the passing of time. In this portrait of a place closed in on itself, where the outside world intrudes only as an echo, Cédric Gerbehaye treats those he films with equal dignity. His generosity reminds us that it is in this act of observation that our humanity is also at stake.
